The Center for Art, Culture, and History—Exeter (CACHE) will be hosting a new local history talk by CACHE’s board president, Dwight Miller, from their quarterly series CACHE Chats: Tales of Exeter and Beyond. Dwight’s discussion is scheduled for Monday, February 16, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the upstairs conference room, and the topic is “The Merrymans of Marinette: The Men Who Bankrolled Exeter’s Citrus Boom.” Most people recognize Merryman Station on Highway 198, just northeast of Exeter. It is currently a popular event venue. Far fewer know the people behind the names. Andrew Curtis Merryman and his son, Reuben Colburn Merryman were wealthy Wisconsin timber barons whose money and ambition helped launch Exeter’s citrus industry in the 1890s. Their influence stretched from Rocky Hill and Badger Hill to Marinette Avenue and rippled through the community for decades. Families like the Van Cleves and Borgmans followed in their wake, shaping Exeter well into the twentieth century. Miller’s talk will explore the backstories, motivations, and far-reaching impacts of A.C. and R.C. Merryman and why their impact still surrounds us today.
